Marine
Safety at Sea
The safety of life at sea has been an matter of concern to seafarers, Operators, insurers and governing organisations for many years, the introduction of guidance such as SOLAS, MEG4 and other safety guidelines have all been aimed to improve safety and to reduce risk across the maritime sector.
Continuous improvement in both operations and governance has steered the sector in a more risk aware direction, SOLAS has helped develop new guidelines for safer mooring operations for ALL ships in order to prevent unsafe and unhealthy work situations during mooring operations.
While mooring equipment guidelines 4 (MEG4) has focused on the industrial (O&G) parts of the marine sector, many other contributory factors, such as weather conditions, sea states, and port locations, all impact mooring safety.
Factors to consider when mooring:
- Importance of safe mooring
- Mooring Plan
- Mooring Plan execution
- Bets practices during adverse conditions
- How to maintain mooring lines
- How to maintain mooring winches
- How to select and install new mooring lines and tails, are all critical building blocks to a safe mooring operation.
Towage & Salvage
Towage and salvage also run a real risk of line failure. This is no more evident than in recent incidents that have resulted in the parting rope recoiling and penetrating the bridge, causing damage to both the vessel and crew alike.
Such incidents are more frequent than you first imagine but nevertheless these incident are life threatening and in some cases avoidable. Current rope handling practices and manufacturer guidance go someway toward supporting safe practices but with the emergence of new technology, “Sureline” towage operations can make a step change in safety.
In support of this, Sensor Technologies has developed a disruptive mooring line monitoring system, “Sureline”. As the need for safer operations increases the need for technology to advance is evermore present and Sensor Technologies are here to support and inspire innovation.
On the current technology roadmap, variants of Sureline are being drawn up along with “Surecore”, an advanced innovative technology to offer a 360-degree full-thickness rope examination in real-time. This advancement will offer a full rope health check in advance of any current sector technology and will, in time, replace the current visual inspection and destructive testing.
In 2025, Sensor technologies are set to prelaunch “Fender Force” For information on this, please complete the enquiry button below.
